The Work of Therapy
The work of psychotherapy is carried out in the context of a one-on-one relationship between client and therapist. Meetings are held regularly either in person or online. The client seeks the help, and the conversation ensues.
Therapeutic work is hard as it involves facing previously avoided material, changing long standing patterns of thought, feelings and behavior. Inevitably it engenders some level of discomfort. In the therapeutic work, the therapist monitors the level of discomfort and keeps it to a manageable level. While therapy is not excruciatingly painful, it is serious work and involves way more than talking to a sympathetic ear.
