The Therapeutic Relationship: Transference
The relationship with the therapist in psychotherapy is a centerpiece. The technical term for the relationship is called transference. As therapy evolves, feelings emerge toward the therapist that provide cues to problematic early relationships. Transference provides therapeutic opportunity to understand oneself in relation to others.

Exploration of the transference provides a unique opportunity to safely explore feelings in a relationship that are normally avoided, minimized or softened out of respect for social convention.
